My Top Tips for Travelling Long-Haul

The flight

Either you love flying long-haul or you don’t. Personally, I love it. I it allows me to disconnect from the world which is what I love the most.

I understand that sitting down for over many hours can be uncomfortable, so here are a few tips to make it more manageable:

1- If you’re travelling economy, you can book one aisle seat and you’re travelling partner, a window seat (or vice versa) and hope no one wants to seat between you.

Alternatively, many airlines (such as Etihad) after booking your seats offer an upgrade to buy the middle seat for a discounted rate for as little as $60. This will ensure no one will sit in the middle seat and gives you both much more room to spread out.

2- Get a decent travel pillow. Sleeping on economy flights can uncomfortable, however since getting a Trtl travel pillow, I’ve found it much easier to sleep. The pillow is lightweight and can easily be folded away to be stored. The main benefit of this pillow is its neck support. I generally find it difficult to sleep on aeroplanes so this really has been a gamechanger for me.

3- Stay hydrated and move around. It’s important to stretch your legs and take a walk around the cabin every now and again which also reduces your risk of DVT.

Packing

Being away for 2 weeks, mean you won’t be able to take a cabin bag only, but you don’t want to pack too much. Carrying a large suitcase from place to place every few days can be tiring.

Pack light and intelligently, most hotels will provide many amenities which you won’t need to pack.

Do your research on the weather in each region before you pack. If you’re traveling in a large country where weather temperature varies, its important you pack with layering in mind.

Layering clothes can give you a lot of warmth and mean you don’t have to pack large coats and jumpers which take up precious space.

Have a safe way to carry around cash and valuables. For me, having clothes with multiple zip pockets takes the stress of not having to carry around a bag with me whenever I leave the hotel.

If that’s not an option for, there are many lightweight bags available with padlocks and security features.

I sometimes take a draw string back bag. It’s lightweight and very difficult for people to pickpocket from.

Make sure you pack basic some medicines and self-care remedies. There’s nothing worse than falling ill on holiday. Over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, oral rehydration solutions, anti-diarrhoeal tablets (you never know!), deep heat/ muscle rub and mosquito repellent are a few necessities. Having these to hand reduced the stress of trying to locate a pharmacy and explain to a pharmacist what is wrong with you in another language, whilst not feeling great!
